City and Citizens of Ancient Athens

Catalog description

Alongside close reading of primary sources from ancient philosophers, historians, and tragedians, students will examine how political ideas were embedded in the material environment of ancient Athens - in its temples, marketplaces, civic buildings, schools, and theaters. The course thus includes a strong experiential component: students will visit Athens, as well as important cultural and religious centers such as Delphi, Epidaurus, Delos, and Cape Sounion, so as to develop a first-hand understanding of how the physical landscape of the ancient Greek world informed its political and civic life.
