Humanism and its History

Catalog description

"Humanism" is the study of what is specifically human about us, for example our love of reasoning and of the arts, and our practice of science, ethics and religion. The tradition of "Humanism" spans over 700 years. We will read from Sarah Bakewell's Humanly Possible: Seven Hundred Years of Free Thinking, Inquiry and Hope, and a selection of major humanist texts spanning from ancient Greece, through 14th C. Italy, to the present. (This course is particularly interesting given that it shows how humans differ from AI, even though AI will not be our focus.)
