Therapeutics Across the Lifespan

Catalog description

At the completion of this course, the student should be proficient in the application of pharmacotherapy to the disease states reviewed in this course. Furthermore, students should be able to utilize knowledge of pharmacology, medicinal chemistry, and pharmaceutics principles to improve patient outcomes for these disease states. Each learning outcome will be assessed using an assessment strategy appropriate to the level of learning. Teaching and learning methods will involve self-assessment of knowledge, active learning, case studies, and simulations to foster active, life-long learning. This course is designed to enable students to understand the pathophysiologic, pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic, and pharmacotherapeutic differences and complications experienced within special populations including: pregnant and lactating mothers; pediatrics; specific gender related issues; geriatrics; and the terminally ill. The evaluation and treatment of disease states will be discussed and evaluated to enable students to make therapeutic decisions appropriate to these special populations.
