Catalog description
This is an integrated course that covers respiratory-, dermatologic-, and ophthalmic based disorders. After this course, the student should be proficient in applying pharmacotherapy to the disease states reviewed in this course. Furthermore, students should be able to utilize knowledge of pharmacology, medicinal chemistry, and pharmaceutics principles to improve patient outcomes for these disease states. Each learning outcome will be assessed using an assessment strategy appropriate to the level of learning. Teaching and learning methods will involve self-assessment of knowledge, active learning, case studies, and simulations to foster active, life-long learning. In addition, this course is a comprehensive tobacco cessation education tool that will provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to offer comprehensive tobacco cessation counseling to patients who use tobacco. The course will cover information about the epidemiology of tobacco use, pharmacotherapy options, motivational interviewing skills, behavioral interventions, and relapse prevention.
