Catalog description

This course provides 1) an introduction to basic pharmacologic and medicinal chemical principles of drug action and 2) discusses the autonomic nervous system and the therapeutics employed to modulate this system. The first part of the course includes drug interactions with biological tissues, drug mechanisms of action, drug side effects, and relationships between the chemical structure and the biological action of natural and synthetic drug molecules. The latter part of the course covers the pathophysiology of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, finishing with the pharmacology and medicinal chemistry of the therapeutics used to treat these disorders. PHBM 352 is a prerequisite for PHBM 418, 431, 432, 435, 436, and 441.
