This course is one of the required courses for the School of Pharmacy Entrepreneurial Pharmacy Concentration with a primary goal to allow students to explore the idea of whether they have the entrepreneurial spirit and skills to start their own business in the near future. This course goes into detail on what is needed to be an entrepreneur in pharmacy today. Furthermore this course reviews the mistakes that can occur in starting your own business along with exploring the idea that a pharmacy business does not necessarily have to be a traditional pharmacy but can be also a wide variety of non-traditional pharmacy services. This course will focus on the study of current non-traditional models and address the issues on how does a clinically trained pharmacist who has worked as a pharmacy employee begin a new business. This course will bring in current leaders in the pharmacy world who have developed new innovative pharmacy business; in addition, the course will incorporate cases studies on some of the most successful and non-successful pharmacy type businesses in the past 20 years. The course will also focus on non-traditional pharmacy services in terms of potential legal issues since historically most Boards of Pharmacy in the U.S. take the position right now if they are not dispensing medications they are not practicing pharmacy. This course work will complement the 2 credit business project that will be offered concurrently during the same semester. PHBA 431 is a prerequisite for PHBA 433.
