A definition of orchestration is ?the art of combining the sounds of a complex group of instruments to form a satisfactory blend and balance.? It can also mean writing idiomatically for instruments. This points to gaining an understanding of technological innovations in instrumental design. The course seeks to show and demonstrate how to write for the most common instruments found in the orchestra as well as choirs, keyboards, and others. Each group and class of instruments will be demonstrated to show their capabilities and limitations. Students will have an opportunity to create music for each of these instrumental groups as well as showing their own expertise on their instrument. The course culminates in arranging or writing a work for one of the school?s large ensembles.
