Catalog description

The purpose of this class is to use the basic knowledge from Musicianship 1 in musical applications centered on the stylistic norms of the 18th century. We will develop further skills in counterpoint (second and fourth species), harmony, voice-leading, and analysis of basic classical phrases. Although the patterns of harmony come from analyses of 18th century music, the skills learned in this course are broadly applicable to a wide variety of music. Our methods include learning several basic contrapuntal schemes (patterns of harmony), a technique adopted from Gjerdingen (2007) and derived from 18th century Italian pedagogues themselves. The semester culminates in the composition of a keyboard work utilizing the schemes in a binary form. Pre-requisite MUSC 100 or MUSC 101
