String Techniques I

Catalog description

This is the first course in the string techniques sequence, focusing on beginning level instruction in orchestral stringed instruments. This course is intended for undergraduate music education majors and is part of the overall secondary instrument component of the music education curriculum. During this semester, students will focus on an upper string instrument (i.e., violin or viola). In String Tech II, students will focus on a lower string instrument (i.e., cello or double bass). The primary focus of this class is the development of performance skills. Because this course is coordinated with MUED 253: String/Orchestra Methods, which covers recruitment, the sequence of string skills and teaching, rehearsal strategies, program development, materials, etc., these topics will not be addressed formally during the semester. However, because correct pedagogy and teaching methodology will be used in the class, it is expected that students will develop an understanding of basic pedagogy, which will then be addressed beginning in MUED 253: String/Orchestra Methods.
