Inclusive Teaching Strategies for the Music Classroom prepares future music educators to develop appropriate accommodations and modifications for students with special needs in classrooms and rehearsal settings. The course will require students to investigate the history of special education and its impact on music programs, review definitions of specific disabilities, become familiar with recent research on teaching students with special needs, examine the relationship between music education and music therapy, and explore collaborative opportunities with special education programs in schools. Scholarly writing of supplemental reading summaries, as well as reflective writing in field experience journals will be an integral part of the course. Teacher candidates will use prior knowledge of assessment, music curricula, instructional methods, and inclusive educational practices as a foundation from which to design and implement effective instructional adaptations that will make music accessible to all learners.
