Advanced Band Methods

Catalog description

Advanced Band Methods (ABM) focuses on the development of high-school band programs. The course is broadly organized around areas of score projects, repertoire development, and teaching strategies. Across these three areas are specific topics in curriculum development, rehearsal and instructional planning, diagnostic and prescriptive ensemble teaching, and measurement and evaluation of student performance. ABM emphasizes excellent personal skills in musicianship applied to teaching?including, but not limited to, singing and playing with good intonation; accurate pulse, rhythm, and meter; artistic expression; and proficient technical ability on secondary band instruments. Lab experiences include a weekly 50-minute Lab Band immediately preceding ABM (Tuesday Teaching Labs on campus), and extended observations and teaching episodes on select Fridays with area high-school band programs and other District 1 events. Teaching Lab is a separate registration of 1 credit.
