Spanish from Day One: The Art of Learning Spanish by Teaching It

Learning a second language from an early age is key to proficiency and lifelong motivation. Many countries introduce second language instruction in preschool and kindergarten, why not try the same in the U.S.? MLSP 310 is an upper-level, community-engaged Spanish course that bridges this gap by combining cultural exploration with practical teaching experience. Students will interview native speakers in their home countries to learn about traditional festivities such as Día de San Valentín, Día de los Reyes Magos, Año Nuevo, and Día de los Muertos, gaining authentic cultural insights to share with young learners. Using a hands-on, ?learning by teaching? approach inspired by psychologist Lev Vygotsky, students will create and implement lesson plans for preschoolers and elementary school students. Activities are designed to spark curiosity, raise awareness of bilingualism, and foster an appreciation of Spanish-speaking cultures. Through this process, students strengthen their Spanish language skills while developing real-world teaching and communication abilities and exploring theories of second language acquisition. Community partners benefit by addressing the local second language gap, while young learners gain early exposure to new languages and cultures. MLSP 310 prepares students to become culturally informed, enthusiastic language educators capable of engaging children in meaningful, language-rich experiences.
