This course provides healthcare professionals with a comprehensive understanding of Latin American cultural values, health beliefs, and social and political practices as they relate to clinical interactions. The focus is on cultivating cultural humility, fostering respectful and effective communication, and providing culturally responsive care. Students will explore various topics including Hispanic family dynamics, traditional medicine, religious influences, political beliefs, healthcare systems, and perceptions of illness and healing across diverse Spanish-speaking communities. Through case studies, short stories, songs, guest speakers, and interactive discussions, participants will develop a level of cultural competence necessary to build trust and improve outcomes with Spanish-speaking patients from diverse backgrounds.
