Catalog description

This course presents the three modes of heat transfer: conduction, convection, and radiation. One-dimensional steady-state conduction is studied for planar and cylindrical geometries, and the lumped capacitance analysis method is introduced for transient conduction. Convection heat transfer is studied in both internal and external geometries under laminar and turbulent flow regimes. Radiation heat transfer is studied by considering both the general characteristics of radiation as well as the properties of radiating surfaces and radiation heat transfer between surfaces. Methods for solving multi-mode heat transfer are also presented throughout the course. Weekly labs will align with lectures to apply the concepts to real-world systems like heat exchangers.
