Catalog description

The purpose of this course is to enhance students? knowledge of the mathematics needed for teaching in elementary and middle school. Students will develop a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts, procedures, and relationships in the areas of number theory, geometry, data analysis, and algebra with an emphasis on how these concepts relate to problem-solving and critical thinking. Students will engage in solving cognitively challenging mathematical tasks, reflect on the aspects of instruction that support learning, and use these experiences as a basis for developing views about effective mathematics teaching and learning in elementary and middle level classrooms. Students will also learn problem-solving strategies and alternative ways of solving computational problems. This course aims to empower teacher candidates as mathematicians so that they are equipped to someday empower their students as mathematicians.
