Ethics, Teaching, and Critical Education

Catalog description

This course examines the ethical, historical, social, and political dimensions of education, recognizing that schooling is not a neutral enterprise, but a contested institution shaped by competing interests, values, and moral concerns. Students will explore historical and sociopolitical contexts, interrogate ideological underpinnings of U.S. educational policies, and develop an understanding and application of critical and ethical frameworks for teaching. Drawing on scholars such as Freire, bell hooks, and Henry Giroux, the course empowers teacher candidates to advocate for educational practices that are holistic in nature, and recognize the whole child.
