Catalog description
Enrollment Limit: 20 Course Requirement: paper The course is designed to give students a basic knowledge of the nature and sources of Islamic law and of the process of legal reasoning used by Islamic law experts. In addition, students will gain some familiarity with the substantive areas of Islamic law and learn about contemporary issues in Islamic legal studies. Throughout the course we will discuss issues relating to the practice of Islamic law modern nation states. From time to time throughout the class we will also be comparing the law of the U.S., Christian and Jewish traditions to the Islamic law subjects covered in class.
