Elective Course Course Requirement: paper How does the First Amendment protect free expression in the modern age? In this course, we?ll examine the freedoms of speech, press, assembly, and petition, from their Enlightenment origins to a century of Supreme Court case law interpreting them. We?ll then apply them to some of today?s most challenging and pressing policy issues. How does the First Amendment apply to the internet? At school? To elections? When the nation?s security hangs in the balance? We?ll explore these issues and more through nuanced in-class discussions and a paper or moot-court brief.
