Elective Course Course Requirement: paper Satisfies the Upper Level Writing requirement This course provides an introduction to the law of the European Union, a legal entity which comprises 27 member states and has a population of a half-billion citizens. The course involves examining and gaining an understanding of the constitutional evolution of the EU to its present state, and covers doctrines of European Union constitutional law such as supremacy, autonomy, direct effect, and state liability. It will introduce students to the sources of EU law, EU institutions, including the structure and operation of its courts, the law-making process, and the substantive law of the EU in particular the freedom of movement of goods, persons, services and capital. By learning and understanding structures of a different legal system, students should also gain new perspectives on U.S. legal concepts.
