Catalog description

Elective Course Financial Toolkit for Lawyers is an asynchronous course designed to give Duquesne Kline School of Law students a practical introduction to finance and accounting as applied to the law. Through this course, you will improve your financial ?numeracy??your ability to understand and work with numbers?in rendering legal decisions. Numeracy skills apply to all types of lawyering. For example, trial lawyers must calculate expected values when negotiating settlements. Corporate lawyers must understand basic financial statements and transactions. All lawyers must be able to manage their own finances and manage client trust accounts?lest they violate their fiduciary and professional duties. This course examines finance through a financial accounting lens. The overarching goal of this course is to help lawyers become more intelligent consumers of financial and accounting information. To this end, this course focuses heavily on work that trains lawyers to work efficiently in cross-functional teams. Accordingly, your grade will be determined in equal parts by your own performance and your group?s performance.
