Elective Course Prerequisite: This course is open to upper-level law students who have completed the mandatory first-year day or first-year evening curricula. The purpose of this Artificial Intelligence & Social Justice course is to teach and learn how to recognize, call to account, and work to illuminate and dismantle systemized racism and other discrimination that occurs through government use of artificial intelligence systems. The course introduces you to and engages you directly the study of artificial intelligence, law, government accountability, and antiracist and other social justice learning and work through the foundational lenses of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and government transparency statutes. With a growth mindset and the willingness and effort to learn, we will onboard a demonstrable knowledge of artificial intelligence systems, including machine learning, big data, data curation, and other aspects of such systems (collectively, ?artificial intelligence? or ?AI?). Through readings, case projects, government transparency work, learning teams, and discussions and class and project activities among and between Professor Loza de Siles and class members, this course will equip students to: (1) learn and practice lifelong strategies for meeting the professional ethical duties, including as to competence and diligence regarding AI and other technologies; (2) competitively differentiate themselves and their capabilities during law school and throughout their careers; and (3) make meaningful and impactful contributions toward a greater realization of justice and equal protection for all in today?s increasingly algorithmic society. Students may elect to work individually or in teams. Students who work individually may use this course to complete their upper level writing requirement.
