Elective Course Course Requirement: final paper Comparative law is a process, not a substantive area of law, because ?to compare? is a verb. Foreign law is a substantive area of law, because ?foreign? is an adjective to modify the noun ?law?. Neither are verbs. (A verb indicates a process and a noun indicates substance.) The theme of this seminar is that comparativists make comparisons from a perspective, not from a perspective-less neutral position. Thus, the comparativist is most often translating a foreign legal culture into his or her own legal culture in the process of comparing.
