Elective Course Course Requirement: paper This course is designed to provide students an introduction into the German legal system as an example of a civil law system. The course will begin with an introduction into the legal history,political structure, legal education, legal careers, and legal culture in Germany, and then will focus on selected areas of German substantive and procedural law, including constitutional law,administrative law, law of obligations, conflicts of law, family law, labor law, corporate law,criminal law and civil and criminal procedure law. German practitioners will be invited to speak as guest lecturers (online) to provide a insight into German legal issues in practice. By comparison and contrast of the German legal system to the U.S. system, students can also expect to gain new perspectives on U.S. legal concepts. This class is open for anyone interested in German law, civil law systems, or legal systems within the E.U. legal structure. The class may also be taken to prepare students interested in Kline?s Cologne-based study abroad program, externship, or other legal studies in Germany or other foreign legal system.
