Elective Course Course Requirement: exam This course will focus on Special Education Law both federally and statewide. The course will begin with an overview of the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act (Section 504) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as it applies to school settings. The course will also provide a brief history of how the law in this area has changed within the past 40 years, and has ultimately arrived at Pennsylvania being the second most litigious state nationally for special education disputes. The syllabus is structured to allow students to focus on the primary areas of special education disputes under the IDEA and Section 504. Once these areas have been covered, students have an opportunity to focus their knowledge practically by participating in mock due process hearings during the second half of the semester.
