Elective Course Enrollment Limit: 20 Course Requirement: paper or exam Fulfills Current Concentration Elective: Government and Public Interest- Mission and Moral Life Track The course will examine the response of the Catholic Church to the social, political, and economic questions of the modern world. It will provide an overview of the foundations and key themes of the Catholic Social Tradition, focusing primarily on developments since Pope Leo XIII?s 1891 encyclical, Rerum Novarum. Course topics will include the common good, religious freedom and pluralism, the relationship of the state to the Catholic Church, and to other churches, the relationship between law and morality, social justice and charity, subsidiarity, natural law, natural rights, democracy, and economic justice. The implications of the Catholic Social Tradition for contemporary law and policy will also be examined. Students will write one page reflection-reaction papers on a weekly basis.
