This course studies the ideological foundations of contemporary political Islam and, at its core, is concerned with the question of how Islamic political thought has evolved since the founding of Islam, and how this evolution explains contemporary political expressions of Islam. The course asserts as its starting point the intimate relationship between politics and religion in Islam?s formative years, exploring key junctures of continuity and change in the history of this relationship, and highlighting why and how these have played a decisive role in the politics of the modern Muslim world.
