Catalog description

Nationalist conflicts and ethnic conflicts threaten political stability in countries around the world. From Ukraine, to Iraq, to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, to Azerbaijan conflicts have erupted over a wide variety of ?nationalist? and "ethnic" issues in recent years. How is ethnicity different from nationalism? How does nationalist or ethnic identity sometimes lead to violence? This course will explore theories of identity formation and mobilization to better understanding the prevalence of nationalist and ethnic conflicts in the international system today. Most importantly, it will confront the question of how to solve these conflicts, particularly in deeply-divided, violence-ridden countries.
