Transnational Organized Crime

This course explores the dramatic rise of transnational organized crime, its threat to domestic and international security, and strategies to combat it. It surveys established and emerging international organized crime groups who commit diverse criminal activities - trafficking, smuggling, kidnapping, extortion, theft, etc. Case studies will be used to analyze how criminal groups weaken states, encourage corruption, and undermine the rule of law; international efforts and legal frameworks to combat transnational organized crime; real-world challenges in working cases; and the necessity of effective international cooperation.
