Catalog description
This course introduces students to the United States? legacy as a major maritime power, from the Colonial Era to the present. This is more than just an institutional history of the United States Navy?it considers topics such as the strategic concept of sea power and the evolution of naval technology. It also explores social themes such as the development of a professional officer corps, daily life onboard a warship, and gender relations. Finally, the course thinks critically about maritime economics, culture, and Americans? historical relationship to the sea.
