This independent study course is designed to offer students the opportunity to be more self-determined on a university campus. Being ?self-determined? means that people make things happen in their own lives, rather than having others do things for them. This course will be guided by person-centered planning conducted with the student and key stakeholders in their life at the beginning, midterm and end of the semester. With information from this meeting in mind (the student?s strengths, interests and desires), the student will be guided through goal exploration, identifying actionable steps to meeting their goals, and monitoring their own progress throughout the semester. Students will gain valuable skills in the areas of: building daily life skills for on-campus living; effectively communicating with faculty, staff and other students; advocating for their own needs on-campus; and achieving academic success throughout the Fall 2019 semester. Students will disseminate their own reflection on their personal gains with an end-of-semester paper and/or presentation. Assignments in this course are designed to encourage students to take an active role in their own ability to self-advocate and demonstrate self-determination on the college campus.
