This course presents the normal functions of the human body with emphasis on unifying concepts and systems integration. Living processes are discussed at all hierarchical levels, molecular through oganismic. Physical and chemical principles are highlighted where appropriate. The goal for the student in this course is to achieve a firm understanding of the total body function based upon knowledge of the organizatiion, functional mechanisms and interactions of the body's several component systems. Molecular and physical mechanisms are highlighted at all levels of structural organization, from cells to organ systems. Topics in this first part of a two-course sequence range from: basic physiologic chemistry, cell signaling to membrane electrophysiology and muscle physiology. the structure and function of cells and tissues, to homeostatic regulation by the major control systems
