Current Concepts in Sports Medicine

Catalog description
This course will introduce introductory sports medicine concepts related to health and exercise science. It will expose students to emergency action planning and immediate injury management training through American Red Cross CPR/AED training and American College of Surgeons Stop the Bleed certification. Students will gain an appreciation of sudden death in sports, common environmental and physical injuries that active individuals often encounter, and best practices for prevention and management approaches. Students will discuss the most current evidence surrounding concussion and traumatic brain injury, osteoarthritis, ACL injury, and exercise guidelines for healthy populations. Students will learn and discuss methods for wellness and performance promotion and will be exposed to legal, ethical, and moral issues related to current issues in healthcare policy and practice.
