This seminar explores the historical relationships between humans and American landscapes from the 16th century to the present day. It suggests the natural world plays a significant role in the nation?s history by understanding environmental change in historical contexts. Topics may include the consequences of cultural exchanges between Indigenous peoples and settler/colonists, industrial development projects, city building, westward expansion, extraction and conservation, the rise of American state power, pollution, protests and environmental movements, as well as climate change.
