Catalog description

In 1994, South Africa held its first free democratic elections, ending one of the worst human rights abuses of the 20th century, the era known as apartheid. This course will examine the history of South Africa from its precolonial history to the modern day, paying particular attention to the period of colonial conquest, the establishment and struggles against apartheid, and the difficulties facing South Africa in the 21st century. Key figures and groups examined will range from the ANC to Nelson Mandela, the Voortrekkers to F. W. de Klerk, and Umkhonto we Sizwe to Jacob Zuma.
