Catalog description

This class traces the history of India and South Asia from the Mughal Empire to the present. Throughout history but especially from the sixteenth century onward, South Asia has been a region of strategic and economic interest as well as global political intrigue. This course traces the rise and fall of the Mughal Empire, British rule under the East India Company and the British Raj, the Indian nationalist movement, and important developments in post-independence India. In addition to learning the political narrative of modern South Asia, students will connect with the voices of the past through primary source analysis as well as engage with contemporary Indian pop culture.
