Religious Bioethics

Catalog description

This course examines contemporary bioethical issues from the standpoint of Abrahamic religious thought (Christianity, Judaism and Islam) as well as non-Abrahamic religious thought (Buddhism, Hinduism, Confucianism and Sikhism). Issues such as those encountered at the end of life, as well as reproductive technology, genetic science and research will be examined through the lens of various religions in order for students to appreciate the structural differences found between them. Particular attention will be paid to what thinkers in religious traditions say about these issues, how they have reached their conclusion(s) and how their theological or philosophical convictions have influenced their moral judgements. Focus will also be made on the role of religious faith in the analysis of social problems and social responsibility related to healthcare. This course will fulfill the Faith and Reason theme area requirement of the University Core Curriculum and is designated Writing Intensive. The course will thus involve a substantial writing component in which students will write and revise essays in the style of the discipline of healthcare ethics, nursing ethics and bioethics in general. In their papers, students will also construct well-reasoned arguments for controversial ethical issues that arise in healthcare and anticipate and respond to objections and opposing arguments using what they have learned about various types of religious thought.
