AI is everywhere. In the last few years, it has transformed business, education, politics, and warfare. The rush for data centers has upended sustainability debates, and the search for perfect intelligence?AGI?has become the new gold rush. But among all this, what is ethical? What is right? What is just, and what is greed? How can we think clearly about issues of energy, privacy, monopoly, free speech, autonomy, racism, misogyny, and equality? What is the relationship between humans and this powerful technology, and what should it be? What does faith have to do with ethical approaches to AI, and what importance should it have? This course, hosted by Duquesne?s Grefenstette Center for Ethics, is a survey of the major ethical issues facing the development of AI and Generative AI, which includes a deep dive into the inner workings of AI from datasets of human trainers. It fulfills the Ethical Reasoning competency in the Bridges Common Learning Experience (CLE) and is one of the required courses for the AI and Digital Ethics Micro-Credential. This course is the first in a two-course sequence, best paired with GREF 250: AI & Society.
