Catalog description
This is designed to teach the principles and provide experience with physical chemistry applied to pharmaceutical systems. The course will focus on fundamental principles that are widely applicable, including approaches to study kinetics and determine reaction mechanism in complex chemical systems, the mathematical treatment of systems at equilibrium and the thermodynamics of surfaces and interfaces. Fundamental aspects of each topic will be developed, followed by discussions of their relevance to specific pharmaceutical applications. Students will analyze and interpret data and evaluate how the laws and theories governing physical and chemical processes can be used to understand the behavior of specific pharmaceutical systems in the context of formulation, development and drug delivery. Quantitative analysis and interpretation will be stressed.
