Catalog description

The purpose of this course is to foster basic understanding of the solid state and relevant analytical techniques used to probe the structure and physicochemical properties of small molecule organic and polymeric solid materials. Topics within this course include solidification, solid forms (polymorphism, solvates/hydrates, and the amorphous solid state), physical/chemical stability of solid materials, and solubility/dissolution. Students will also learn how powder X-ray diffraction, polarized light and hot-stage microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, dynamic vapour sorption analysis, and BET surface area analysis are used to characterize solid materials as a part of the decision-making processes involved in formulation and drug product development.
