Catalog description
This one-credit independent study course is designed to support the maintenance of clinical competency in anesthesia practice for students with delayed progression in the nurse anesthesia program. This course will stress preparation through continued development of critical thinking via advanced clinical reasoning, perioperative decision-making, and comprehensive anesthesia management planning; this will assist with re-emersion into clinical practice rotations. Incorporation of evidence-based perioperative care through weekly comprehensive case-specific written anesthesia care plans, pre-briefing knowledge assessments, low-fidelity skills, and high-fidelity simulation experiences will be emphasized. Focus is placed on the application and integration of safe, effective anesthesia practice through demonstration of advanced knowledge in pharmacology, physiology, pathophysiology, anesthesia equipment and monitoring, patient safety, communication, professionalism, and maintenance of technical clinical skills. There will also be written work in the form of in-depth anesthesia management plans and Canvas quizzes, in addition to clinical practice in the sim lab. They will be expected, as part of the simulation component of the course, to do a ?mock induction? exercise, which is what the management plans will be for; they must work up a ?real patient?, plan the anesthetic, and execute it in the sim lab. They will also have quizzes in Canvas. "Maintaining Clinical Skills Competency" Students who are out of clinical or lab for a semester must register for a 1-credit Clinical Skills Competency Independent Study to maintain clinical currency. This Independent Study will be executed in the simulation lab at the discretion of the nurse anesthesia faculty.
