Catalog description

This is the final Psychiatric-Mental Health advanced practice nursing clinical course. This clinical course provides a synthesis experience during which students implement the role of the Psychiatric-Mental Health Advanced Practice Nurse. The diagnostic reasoning focus of this course is on obsessive-compulsive and related disorders, neurocognitive disorders, neurodevelopmental disorders, feeding and eating disorders, sleep and wake disorders, and somatic disorders across the lifespan. Students will demonstrate mastery of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (current edition) as the basis for diagnostic nomenclature. Current and emerging evidence will be synthesized to identify appropriate evidence-based screening tools, complete initial diagnostic interviews, formulate differential diagnoses, and implement initial and ongoing treatment plans based on shared decision making. Treatments include evidence-based pharmacologic, non-pharmacologic, and complementary/alternative interventions. Case-based simulations and clinical practicum provide students opportunities to integrate theory and practice in supervised clinical experiences. The clinical component will focus on assessment and intervention with individuals with mental illness and individuals / populations at risk for mental illness. Leadership aspects of the PMHNP role across healthcare systems and settings is emphasized. Interprofessional collaboration with other health care providers is highlighted for management and evaluation of patient care and population health outcomes.
