Psychiatric-Mental Health advanced practice nursing requires knowledge of the history, laws, and policies impacting assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of individuals with mental health alterations and psychiatric disorders. This course explores this content in the context of the scope and standards of the advanced nursing practice role. The foundation for diagnosing will be presented by providing the overarching concepts of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (current edition). While individual risk for mental health resilience, alterations and illnesses may be inherited and / or acquired over the lifespan, recovery-oriented systems of care will highlight a strengths-based approach. Critical population, cultural, individual, family, and situational factors are explored with attention to at-risk periods. Primary, secondary, and tertiary levels of prevention are explored with attention to consultation, advocacy, and the collaborative roles of the Psychiatric-Mental Health Advanced Practice Nurse.
