Epidemiology is the study of the distribution and determinants of health-related states or events in specified populations, and the application of this study to the control of health problems. It is one of the fundamental sciences of Public Health and provides the basis for much of what we know about health and disease. HADM 411 focuses on the role and use of epidemiologic tools in the field of health care administration. Within specific areas of health administration, epidemiologic techniques are applied to management, research, planning, quality assurance, financing, and economic analysis of healthcare organizations. HADM 411 is intended to acquaint students with the concepts, methods, and techniques of managerial epidemiology. Healthcare policy and systems changes are leading to the shift from individual health to population health. Managerial epidemiology methods can also be applied to organizational evaluation, clinical practice improvement, and decision making. During the course, understanding of principles of epidemiology, research design, and use of data for management of population health will be stressed. Assignments prioritize student?s comprehension of the material and ability to apply learned concepts to practical scenarios, including subsets of populations. The overall goal of this course is to equip future health leaders (you) with essential epidemiological principles and tools to make informed decisions to maximize the health and wellbeing of the populations you serve.
