Catalog description

This course provides a framework for understanding key concepts and domains in the area of healthcare administration, including emerging areas such as the applications of generative AI to health administration. Additionally, it customizes those concepts and domains in the context of health and healthcare by focusing on implications, practices, and examples from healthcare organizations and providers. Current organization and composition of healthcare system in the United States and relevant issues and challenges faced by healthcare providers will also be discussed. Utilizing recent healthcare challenges, including COVID-19, the course will address some of the key problems facing health care organizations today. By the end of the course, you will be exposed to many healthcare management ideas, theories and applications. You will understand how US healthcare system evolved over time and you will understand how the health system is financed. We will learn from each other through class discussion and review of materials in class and online. This course provides you with an overview of how health care institutions are organized and governed, common skills required to work in a healthcare field, the role of effective leadership and communication, human resources, as well as other introductory topics.
