Proper investigation of a crime scene is a critical component in the pursuit of the truth in any incident. Scene security and safety, identification and the collection of evidence, and detailed documentation efforts are required of investigators charged with this important task. Advancements in technology have allowed crime scene investigators to ?bring the scene to the courtroom? in ways that were not possible decades ago. This course will introduce students to the fundamentals of investigating crime scenes, with particular emphasis on scene documentation methods and technology. Students will also learn about specific evidence collection and scene documentation techniques as well as ways to address unique challenges in complex crime scenes. They will be exposed to real-world examples of crime scenes that were limited to a single room or spanned many city blocks. Finally, students will be challenged to employ accepted crime scene investigation techniques in hands-on activities. Prerequisite: FORE courses, levels 100 through 400.
