What do I do when my relatives make uncomfortable comments about race over dinner? Why is it wrong for a teacher to wear a Native American headdress during class? What is CRT and why is everyone complaining about it on social media? In this course, we will explore the questions: How do I talk about race? What is racism and how does it manifest in our day to day? What is privilege, and who benefits from it? What is cultural appropriation? What resources around anti-racism are out there? How can I be a better ally? This class intends to create a space that creates a common language and finds common grounding. In this class we will examine various social justice related resources that recognizes and celebrates our differences. Through a variety of learning experiences, this seminar will explore the boundaries of difference and diversity, how representation or lack thereof informs our worldviews, how we can hold ourselves and others accountable, and create more inclusive spaces both in and outside of our respective majors.
