Why Does China Matter Today?
Duquesne University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
China, a country drastically different from the United States, is becoming an increasingly important part of the world. Distance and cultural dissimilarities cloud America?s view of the eastern land, yet we feel the effects of its existence. What does this mean to us? Why does this matter? Students will explore these questions and more through cross-cultural and cross-national contexts. Various learning activities will introduce students to historical and cultural texts, as well as traditional and social media, to take a fresh look at America and the world. We will look into what seems to be an obvious and also mysterious subject, and we will consider how people around the world tackle similar challenges in diverse ways and how their successes and failures affect us all.
