What is Intersectionality?

?What is Intersectionality?? will examine social justice through the lens of intersectionality, a concept coined by Kimberlé Crenshaw that examines the ways different forms of oppression layer upon each other (or intersect). In particular, we will look at texts on gender, sexuality, ability, race, class, and citizenship status as well as other identities. The course will ask students to engage in open dialogue about the way multiple identities shape one?s experiences in the world and necessitates social justice through the lens of multiple forms of oppression. The class will include texts by: Kimberlé Crenshaw, Audre Lorde, Angela Davis, Stella Young, Jack Halberstam, and others.
