EQ 126
Spiritual but not Religious?
Duquesne University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
The words ?Spirit? and ?spiritual? are familiar and yet strange. What do they really mean? Have people today forgotten something vitally important about the real meaning of Spirit? Can institutional religion be spiritual? Or must one be against organized religion to know Spirit and be spiritual? How can we make sense of all the competing views of spirituality today? Through class discussions about classic spiritual texts of the Jewish, Christian, and Islamic traditions, as well as music and films from each tradition, this course will examine these questions. The course will examine different perspectives on the meaning of Spirit and spirituality, giving special attention to questions about how to put one?s spirituality into words that others can understand and respect.
