Catalog description

This is a graduate level course on air quality and air pollution control. The course is structured to blend technical, social, and political air quality issues into real world activities. In this course students will not solely focus on scientific and technical issues but will learn how to apply those principles. The course will begin with the history of Air Pollution, the resulting regulations, and show the impact of those regulations locally and abroad. Students will be presented with Air Quality perspectives of governmental regulators, environmental professionals in the industrial sector, and environmental consulting. Regulations and regulatory issues will be discussed in relationship to the current regulatory climate. Various types of controls and pollution prevention technologies will be discussed as well as the mechanisms for developing and maintaining air emission inventories. Time will also be spent discussing air emissions and their contribution to climate change. Students will also be challenged to work in groups to prepare permit applications and to present their findings during a class presentation. Upon completion of this course, students will have a general understanding of air quality and have the skills necessary to analyze and understand major air quality and air pollution issues.
